Definition of Full-Spectrum Sauna
A sauna that has near, mid, and far-infrared light wavelengths.
Near-infrared is the shortest wavelength starting from 0.7μm to above 1μm while far-infrared is the longest wavelength at 3.0–100 μm.
Given the different wavelengths, they penetrate the body at different depths, with far-infrared penetrating the deepest—about 4 cm into the skin.
A full-spectrum sauna provides broader health benefits than a far-infrared sauna since it contains different wavelengths.
From the image above, near-infrared rays (NIR) between 650 nm to 900 nm at a fluence rate of - 0.125 penetrated the skin to 0.1 cm.
However, they penetrated the skin at different depths at a fluence rate of - 0.432. Longer NIR wavelengths 900 nm penetrated the epidermis to about 0.75 cm while the shortest NIR maintained its depth at 0.1 cm.
Near-infrared rays penetrate deeper in fat and muscle tissue compared to the epidermis.
At a fluence rate of - 0.125, NIR of wavelengths 650 nm, 775 nm, and 900 nm, the wavelengths penetrated fat and muscle tissue at 1 cm. This is compared to a penetration depth of 0.1 cm in the human epidermis.
The wavelengths maintained a similar depth at a fluence rate of - 0.432. Still, they penetrated the tissue to different depths at a fluence rate of - 1, with the longest wavelength—900 nm—penetrating the tissue the deepest.
