How to Choose a Cold Plunge Tub
- Chiller or ice. Ice works for an occasional plunge, but keeping 100+ gallons cold takes a lot of it. A chiller holds your set temperature and filters the water. Ours cool to 34-37°F, and most also heat for a warm soak. Shop cold plunge chillers and parts.
- Size. The barrels and inflatables have you sit upright. The SoulCold, Cuboids and Cold Plunge Pro are long enough to lie back in. Check the interior length against your height.
- Indoor or outdoor. Most of these tubs can go outside. Chillers have an operating air-temperature range, so check it before leaving one outdoors year-round in a cold climate.
- Power. Every chiller here runs on a standard 110-120V GFCI outlet. You don't need the 240V circuit a sauna heater does.
- Materials. Stainless steel cleans most easily and lasts longest. Cedar and Thermo-Spruce match a sauna. Inflatables are the lowest-cost way to start.
Cold Plunge and Sauna
Alternating heat and cold is the reason many of our customers buy a plunge. Our guides cover the order to do them in and the benefits of cold plunging.
Cold Plunge FAQs
How cold should a cold plunge be?
Cleveland Clinic suggests beginners start between 50 and 59°F and never go below 40°F. Every chiller we sell lets you set the exact temperature.
How long should you stay in a cold plunge?
Cleveland Clinic recommends a minute or two when you're starting out, and no session longer than five minutes. Talk with your doctor first if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or circulation problems, or are pregnant.
Do I need a chiller for a cold plunge?
No. Ice works. A chiller makes sense if you plunge most days, because it holds the temperature and keeps the water filtered.
Does a cold plunge need a dedicated circuit?
No 240V circuit is needed. Plug it into a GFCI-protected 120V outlet, ideally one that isn't shared with other big loads.
Can a cold plunge go outside?
Yes, most can. Keep the cover on, and check the chiller's air-temperature range for winter use.
