What Is an Infrared Sauna?

An infrared sauna uses infrared heater panels to warm your body directly instead of heating the air first. You get a full sweat at about 120 to 150°F, compared with 160 to 195°F in a traditional sauna, and most indoor cabins are ready in 15 to 30 minutes. For how the heaters work, the types of infrared heat and which benefits research supports, read our guide: What is an infrared sauna?

Types of Infrared Saunas

Before You Buy

  • Electrical. Some indoor cabins, like the Dynamic Versailles and Finnmark FD-2, plug into a standard 120V, 15A outlet. Others need a dedicated 120V circuit, and some outdoor models, like the SunRay Cayenne, are hardwired on 220V. Each product page lists the requirement.
  • Space. Most 2-person indoor cabins fit a footprint of about 4 by 3.5 feet with a 6.5-foot ceiling. Check the clearance the manual calls for around the cabin.
  • Assembly. Indoor cabins arrive as panels that clip or bolt together, and two people can usually assemble one in an hour or two.
  • Running cost. A session in a 2-person indoor cabin, counting warm-up, costs roughly 20 to 40 cents at average U.S. electricity rates.

Infrared Sauna FAQs

How much does an infrared sauna cost?

Our infrared saunas start at $1,399 for a 1-person indoor cabin. Most 2-person indoor models run about $2,100 to $3,700, and large full spectrum, outdoor and hybrid models cost more. See how much a home sauna costs for the full picture, including installation.

Can an infrared sauna plug into a regular outlet?

Many indoor models can, including the Dynamic Versailles and Finnmark FD-2, which plug into a standard 120V, 15A outlet. Others need a dedicated 120V circuit, and some outdoor models are hardwired on 220V. Check the product page before you order.

How hot does an infrared sauna get?

Most infrared saunas run 120 to 150°F. Finnmark's full spectrum models reach up to 170°F. Because infrared warms your body directly, you sweat at lower air temperatures than in a traditional sauna.

What's the difference between far infrared and full spectrum?

Far infrared saunas use carbon panels that emit far infrared, which does most of the heating in any infrared sauna. Full spectrum saunas add near and mid infrared emitters for people who want the full range in one session, and they usually cost more. Compare models in our best full spectrum infrared saunas guide.

Should I get an indoor or outdoor infrared sauna?

Indoor cabins are smaller, cost less and fit a basement, bedroom or home gym. Outdoor infrared saunas have a roof and weather-resistant wood for the backyard and need a level base. Browse outdoor infrared saunas, or call us at 1-855-963-5665 and we'll help you choose.
