What Is a Full Spectrum Infrared Sauna?

A full spectrum infrared sauna combines carbon far infrared panels, which do most of the heating, with heaters that also emit near and mid infrared. Far infrared warms you enough to sweat; near infrared reaches a little deeper into the skin and is often paired with red light. A far infrared sauna uses carbon panels alone. If heat and sweat are all you are after, a far infrared sauna does the job for less. Several picks below, like the Cordoba and Lugano, come in far infrared versions with the same cabin.

Best for 2 people who want the hottest indoor infrared sauna

The Finnmark FD-2 is the full spectrum sauna we have in our Ketchum showroom, and it is the one we point to first. It reaches 170°F, about 25 degrees hotter than the other indoor cabins on this list, yet it still plugs into a standard 120V outlet. It pairs Finnmark's Spectrum Plus full spectrum heaters with carbon panels, inside a Western red cedar interior and a thermo-aspen exterior with wool insulation. Wi-Fi control lets you start it from your phone, which matters because it takes about an hour to reach full temperature.

What to know before you buy: Expect about 15 to 20 minutes to a comfortable session temperature and close to an hour to reach 170°F. Preheat with the app.

Best for full spectrum on a budget

What to know before you buy: Cedar has a strong scent for the first few months. If you are sensitive to aromas, hemlock is the neutral choice.

What to know before you buy: Unlike the FD-2, it runs on 240V, so it needs a dedicated circuit and receptacle.

Best for people who want infrared and a traditional sauna in one

What to Look For in a Full Spectrum Sauna

• Electrical. Plug-in 120V/15A models are the easiest. Many 3-person cabins need a dedicated 120V/20A circuit, and some larger models need 240V. Check before you order.
• Heater coverage. Count the heaters and where they sit: behind your back, at your calves and under the bench. More coverage means more even heat.
• Maximum temperature. Most indoor cabins top out at 145°F. If you want more heat, Finnmark reaches 170°F.
• EMF. Ask for the reading and the distance it was measured from. A rating "at 2 to 3 inches from the heaters" and one "at the seat" are not the same thing. See our guide to EMF and infrared saunas.
• Wood. Hemlock is neutral and affordable; cedar costs more and has a strong, pleasant aroma.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a full spectrum infrared sauna worth it?

If you want near infrared and red light in the same session, yes. If you mainly want heat and a good sweat, a far infrared sauna of the same size costs less and does that job well. Far infrared does most of the heating in both.

Is full spectrum or far infrared better?

Neither is better for everyone. Full spectrum adds near and mid infrared on top of far infrared, usually for $500 to $1,500 more. Far infrared alone heats just as well in most cabins.

How hot does a full spectrum infrared sauna get?

Most indoor full spectrum saunas reach 145°F. Finnmark's full spectrum saunas, like the FD-2, reach 170°F, though it takes close to an hour to get there.

Can a full spectrum sauna plug into a regular outlet?

Many can. The Finnmark FD-2, Dynamic Cordoba, Dynamic Martin and Maxxus 2-Person plug into a standard 120V, 15A outlet. Larger cabins often need a dedicated 20 amp or 240V circuit.

Is near infrared in a sauna the same as red light therapy?

Not quite. Near infrared is just beyond visible red light. Many full spectrum saunas include near infrared emitters and separate red light, and the two are often marketed together, but red LEDs produce light, not meaningful heat.
