Smoke Sauna

type of sauna

Definition of Smoke Sauna

A wooden room without a chimney where sauna users can enjoy a soft, enveloping heat. It’s also the rarest variation of the Finnish sauna.

To use a smoke sauna, light a fire on the stove (usually fitted under a rock pile) and let the smoke fill the room.

After a while, release the smoke from the room by opening a hole in the wall, or through the door.

Once the smoke has cleared, the room is warm and ready for use. Bathers can pour water over the hot stones to enjoy a humid session characterized by a smoky smell.

Smoke saunas are usually about 70°C so you’ll still get hot enough to sweat. However, they’re rarely used now.
