Sauna Electrical Requirements
The short version
- Most infrared saunas run on a standard 120V household outlet. Some need a 20-amp circuit, and a few larger or outdoor models need 240V.
- Traditional and hybrid saunas need a dedicated 240V circuit installed by a licensed electrician, with two exceptions noted below.
- Every product page lists that model's exact voltage and amperage. Always go by the product page for your model.
Infrared saunas
Infrared saunas fall into three groups:
| Requirement | What it means |
|---|---|
| 120V, 15 amps | Plugs into a standard US outlet. Make sure no other large appliances share that circuit. |
| 120V, 20 amps | Needs a 20-amp outlet. Ideally the sauna has its own circuit; at minimum, no other large appliances on it. |
| 240V | Needs a dedicated 240V circuit and receptacle installed by a licensed electrician before the sauna arrives. This includes some 4-person, 8-person and outdoor models. |
Size alone doesn't tell you which group a sauna is in. Some 4-person models use 15 amps, and some 2-person models need 20 amps or 240V. Check the product page.
Traditional and hybrid saunas
- Traditional and hybrid sauna heaters run on 240V and are typically hardwired on a dedicated circuit. The circuit size depends on the heater's kW rating, listed on the product page.
- Exceptions: the Harvia Vega 1700 and Vega 1900 heaters run on 120V.
- Plan for a licensed electrician to run the circuit and connect the heater and controller.
Before your sauna arrives
- Share your model's electrical specs from the product page with your electrician.
- Don't use an extension cord or power strip with any sauna.
- For outdoor saunas, your electrician will advise on outdoor-rated wiring and protection for your location.
What we can and can't help with
We can confirm the electrical specs for any model we sell. We don't perform electrical work, and we can't assess your home's panel, wiring, breakers or permit requirements. That's a job for your licensed electrician, and our team is happy to send them the spec sheet for your model.
