THE SHORT ANSWER

Size a sauna heater to your room's volume in cubic feet (length x width x height). As a guide: a 4.5 kW heater covers about 100 to 210 cubic feet, a 6 kW covers 170 to 300, an 8 kW covers 250 to 425, and a 9 kW covers up to about 500. Add about 4 cubic feet for every square foot of glass or bare masonry before you choose. When your number lands between two sizes, pick the larger one, but stay within the heater's rated range: an oversized heater will not make the sauna any hotter. A 6 kW heater draws 25 amps at 240 volts; an 8 kW draws about 33.

Room ranges are Harvia's published ratings for the Kip (4.5 to 8 kW) and Cilindro and Virta (9 and 10.5 kW) heaters. Other brands rate their heaters a little differently, so always confirm the range on the product page. Amps are calculated as watts divided by 240 volts.

How to Size a Sauna Heater in 3 Steps

  1. Measure the inside of the sauna in feet and multiply length x width x height. A 6 ft. x 8 ft. room with a 7 ft. ceiling is 336 cubic feet. For a barrel sauna, use the manufacturer's stated interior volume.
  2. Add for surfaces that soak up heat. Harvia's rule is to add about 4 cubic feet for every square foot of glass, tile or uninsulated masonry (1.2 cubic meters per square meter). If the walls are solid log, multiply the whole room volume by 1.5.
  3. Pick the heater whose rated range covers your adjusted number. If you land between two sizes, go up one. An outdoor sauna in a cold climate is another reason to size up.

Quick Tip: The glass adjustment is why so many 6-person barrels with a glass back need a 9 kW heater, even though their room volume alone would fit an 8 kW.

How to Size a Heater for a Barrel Sauna

Barrels need slightly different math because the room is a cylinder, and a few details trip people up.

  1. Use the inside diameter and the hot room length. Barrel volume is 3.14 x radius x radius x length. If you only have exterior dimensions, subtract twice the stave thickness (listed in the specs) from the diameter.
  2. Count only the heated room. If your barrel has a porch or a changing room behind a partition wall, leave that length out.
  3. Add for glass ends. Panoramic glass is common on barrels and it changes the answer. A full glass end is about 28 sq. ft. on a 6 ft. barrel (adds about 110 cubic feet) and about 38 sq. ft. on a 7 ft. barrel (adds about 150).
  4. Remember it sits outside. Barrel walls are solid wood with no insulation, so if you land near the top of a heater's range, step up one size. Don't go past the next heater's range.
  5. A note on Harvia's log wall rule. Harvia recommends multiplying room volume by 1.5 for saunas with solid log walls, and some people apply that to barrels because the staves are solid wood. In our experience, that math often lands a barrel on a heater that's too large, for example pushing a 6-person barrel (308 cubic feet) to about 460 cubic feet and from an 8 kW to a 9 or 10.5 kW heater, with the downsides described above. We size barrels on their actual volume plus glass, and step up only when you're near the top of a range.
  6. Plan the bench clearance first. Barrels are tight, and benches often end up close to the heater. Check the heater's required clearances in its manual before you choose a model; this is where the scorched bench in the story above came from.

The two overlap between 250 and 300 cubic feet. In that zone, choose the 8 kW if your sauna has a glass door or window, sits outdoors, or you plan to use it with a group. Choose the 6 kW if the room is indoors, well insulated and your electrical panel is tight on capacity.

Does a bigger heater use more electricity? Not much, if it's sized correctly. An 8 kW heater draws more power while its elements are on, but it reaches temperature sooner and then cycles on and off to hold it. The energy a session uses depends mostly on how much heat your room loses. An undersized heater is the costly mistake: it runs flat out, heats slowly and may never reach a proper sauna temperature.

Why a Bigger Heater Isn't Necessarily a Better Heater

One of the most common requests we get is to upsize a heater well beyond what the room needs, usually because someone is worried their sauna won't get hot enough or will take too long to heat. It's an understandable instinct, but it doesn't work the way people expect.

  • It won't get any hotter. Every heater's thermostat stops at the same maximum temperature. Once the room reaches it, a 9 kW heater and a 6 kW heater hold exactly the same heat.
  • It's only slightly faster. An oversized heater shaves a little off the warm-up time, not the dramatic difference most people are hoping for.
  • It's hard on the sauna. The extra output concentrates on the wood nearest the heater, drying it out and, over time, scorching it.

We saw this recently with a customer outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. Even after accounting for his glass, his sauna fell in the 4.5 to 6 kW range, but he wanted the extra headroom and chose an 8 kW Harvia Spirit. His bench layout also put a bench close to the heater. The sauna didn't get any hotter than a correctly sized heater would have made it, and the bench nearest the heater started to scorch. He sanded it down and now keeps an eye on it, but a 6 kW heater would have given him the same sauna without the damage.

Our rule: round up when you're between two sizes, but stay inside the heater's rated range. And check the clearance between the heater and your benches in the installation manual before you finalize the layout; a larger heater usually needs more room. If you're worried about heat-up time, a Wi-Fi control that starts the sauna before you get home solves it better than a bigger heater.

Replacing an Old Sauna Heater

  1. Read the old heater's label. Note its kW, voltage (240V or 208V) and whether it has built-in controls or a separate wall control.
  2. Re-measure the room. Many older saunas were under-heated from day one. Run the three-step sizing above rather than copying the old size.
  3. Match or upgrade the circuit. Same kW and voltage usually means the existing breaker and wire can be reused. Going up a size, for example 6 kW to 8 kW, usually means a larger breaker and heavier wire, so have an electrician check before you order.
  4. Match the control. Heaters without built-in controls need a compatible wall control. If your old control is a different brand, plan to replace it too.
  5. Check clearances and stones. Mount the new heater at the distances in its own manual, and start with fresh sauna stones.
