Sauna Sizing Guide: Will It Fit?
How many people it seats
A sauna's listed capacity is the maximum number of people it seats. If you want room to stretch out, most people are happier one size up. A couple who wants space to relax usually prefers a 3-person sauna over a 2-person. If you're tall, check the interior dimensions on the product page, not just the person count.
Measuring your space
- Footprint: compare the exterior width and depth on the product page to your space. Leave room to walk around it and open the door.
- Ceiling height: most indoor saunas are about 75" tall on the outside, and the largest are up to 87". You also need a few extra inches above the sauna to set the roof during assembly. Your model's manual lists the exact clearance.
- Wall clearance: leave about an inch or two between the sauna and surrounding walls. Your model's manual lists the exact clearance.
Indoor flooring
- Choose a flat, level surface.
- Many infrared saunas, including Finnmark and Dynamic models, can go on carpet. The product page notes when a model is carpet-friendly.
- Traditional saunas depend on whether the sauna has its own floor. Models with a built-in floor need a flat, level surface. Some indoor traditional saunas are floorless so they can sit on your existing tile or sealed concrete. Those need a hard, water-resistant floor, since water is ladled over the hot rocks. The product page notes whether a floor is included.
Outdoor placement
Outdoor saunas need a solid, level base: a concrete pad, pavers, or a deck built to carry the sauna's weight. The product page lists the weight, and barrel and cabin saunas are heavy. Plan the base before your sauna arrives.
Getting it into place
Saunas ship flat-packed, in panels on a freight pallet, and are assembled where they'll be used. If your path in includes tight stairs, narrow halls or a basement, tell our team the measurements before you order and we'll check the panel sizes for your model.
Assembly and installation
- Most indoor saunas take two people about 2 to 3 hours to assemble, usually with basic hand tools. Outdoor and barrel saunas take longer.
- We can arrange assembly nationwide through our partner, saunainstall.com. Assembly is scheduled after your sauna is delivered and inspected, and it covers assembly only, not electrical work. Ask our team for pricing on your model.
